Extreme heat events are becoming more frequent and intense. We are developing a Heat Action Plan to help reduce the risk of harmful effects on the community, infrastructure and services. Your lived experience and local knowledge will help inform this plan and shape practical actions that will promote community resilience and adaptation to extreme heat conditions.
Some people are more susceptible to the impacts of high heat. For this reason we would like to hear from:
- Older residents (particularly those living alone and with pre-existing health conditions)
- those living without air-conditioning; and/or unwilling to use their air conditioners due to cost of electricity
- people with certain health conditions, particularly mental illness, heart disease, kidney disease, diabetes, and hypertension
- people with disabilities
- people who may be experiencing homelessness.
The Heat Action Plan is an emergency planning document that forms part of our Local Emergency Management Arrangements (LEMA). It will provide guidance on how the City manages extreme heat events, before, during and after they occur.
The Plan will be finalised before Summer 2026-2027.
- How extreme heat impacts you or your household
- what helps you stay safe and comfortable during extreme heat
- challenges you may face during extreme heat (at home, at work or in public spaces)
- what the City is currently doing that helps reduce the impacts of heatwaves and extreme heat for you/your household
- what the City can do to further support the community to better prepare and respond to extreme heat.
This feedback will help inform actions to improve health and liveability across our City, particularly for people at increased risk of heat-related illness.
This project acknowledges the funding contribution of the Department of Fire and Emergency Services.
